Super Mario RPG
Another 'Dream Project' along the lines of Chrono Trigger, Nintendo teamed up with Square in their very prime to produce the first game in the Super Mario RPG series. Later games would be quite different, but may not have even been made if not for this.. It's almost eerie that just months after handling Nintendo's most famous IP, Square would head off to work with Sony for the entirety of the next generation.

It always appears that Mario heads to Koopa Castle.
However, from now on, things are different from the past...in the series' first RPG, the stage unfolds as Mario goes on a grand adventure!

Paper Mario / Mario Story
Being developed under the working title "Super Mario RPG 2" at one point, Nintendo smoothly pivoted into their own style after losing Square as co-developers. Going in the opposite direction from Super Mario RPG, here Nintendo embraced 2D graphics on a primarily 3D system.

"Paper Mario" sets off on a new (RPG) adventure!!
Mario and his allies, flapping around like paper, unravel a 3D world in this fun filled RPG! In a new Mario World fusing both action and role-playing, Mario goes on a big, new adventure! Both the Star Spirits and Princess Peach have been abducted by Koopa, so it's off to rescue them.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi RPG
The platformer-RPG mechanics introduced by Intelligent Systems in Paper Mario get even more creative with Alpha Dream's attempt in Superstar Saga. I dug the colorful characters and font set against the mostly white backdrop.
It's finally here!! The Mario Brothers in a role playing game!!
The story is set in Mameria (Beanbean) Kingdom. There, the witch Geragemona (Cackletta) has stolen Princess Peach's beautiful voice! The familiar brother combo, Mario and Luigi, get word of the news and set off on an adventure. Utilize the A&B buttons to unleash "Brother Actions" and "Brother Attacks". Use them well to wipe out Geragemona and her gang!
Play [Mario Bros] in a 2 to 4 player battle mode as well!
You can play Mario Bros, too! "With 1 cartridge, 4 players can battle!" Also, by connecting with the [Super Mario Advance] series of cartridges in "multi cartridge play," participate in a heated battle with your friends!
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door / Paper Mario RPG (GameCube)
Mimicking the game's theater scenes, the Japanese edition of Thousand-Year Door received gorgeous red drape background for its cover art. To this day, many consider it the best of Mario's RPG-style adventures.
