Yoshi Series Japanese Packaging from 1991-2002

Yoshi's Egg (NES/Famicom)

With a bright egg yolk background, Yoshi hatches onto the NES. From the day I first saw this game in Nintendo Power, I considered it a concession to those not lucky enough to receive a SNES at launch. Seeing Yoshi and references to Super Mario World on the box must have been torture for thousands of kids.

Yoshi's Egg

Back:
An intense gathering with your friends from Super Mario World!

A pleasant action-puzzle game.

Goomba, Blooper, Piranha Plant, Boo: As they fall, create a pile of the same characters to make them disappear with a poof! Certain victory is decided on how you produce Yoshi eggs. Create eggs with skill to meet with 4 different kinds of Yoshis!

Yoshi's Egg (Game Boy)

The Game Boy variant is largely the same, but colored to be easier on the eyes. The text is identical except on the front cover, specifying the available play modes.

Front:
Versus Type Game
1 Player Mode is available.

Yoshi's Cookie (NES/Famicom)

Yoshi appears delighted as a sugar coma is surely heading his way faster than a Bullet Bill. This is the one Yoshi game where his eyes are cutely used to replace the ッ 'choked sound' to alter pronunciation of Japanese words.

Yoshi's Cookie

Back:
A somewhat different action puzzle game.

Guaranteed to be cute.

Hearts, flowers, diamonds, checkers, circles and also...Yoshi's special cookie. Move six types of cookies all around, lining them up into the same pattern.
The 1-player game has a total of 100 stages.
Excitement is a sure bet in battle mode, which includes two types of games for two player. YOU decide how to handle Yoshi's cookies!

Yoshi's Cookie (Game Boy)
Like Yoshi's Egg, the use of color for the Game Boy box art is toned and the text is largely the same. One exception is multiplayer includes up to 4 people.

Versus Type Game
1 Player Mode is available.

Yoshi's Cookie (SNES / Super Famicom)
The Super Nintendo package gets a more realistic and appetizing array of colors, suitable for the system's wide palette. The behind the box text is also completely different as more modes have been added to this edition.

Yoshi's enjoyable puzzle game.

(Basic Action Mode)
(Contemplative Puzzle Mode)
(Vs. Battle Mode for everyone)

Yoshi's Cookie has these three modes as pictured. Depending on the mode, the rules slightly differ, but the basics are the same. The basic rules are as depicted in the screens. Move the six types of cookies, and create rows with the same cookie types only. 'Action Mode' has you eliminate all the cookies shown on the screen. In 'Vs Mode' you will battle an opponent in order to clear 25 rows of cookies first. In 'Puzzle Mode,' you'll attempt to clear away the cookies with a set number of movements across various objectives. Well then, go on and play with your pals Yoshi, Mario, Peach and Koopa!!

Yoshi's Safari / Yoshi's Road Hunting (Super Nintendo / Super Famicom)
I had a Super Scope and always wanted to try this. Sadly, it wasn't available at my local rental stores and in those days I would only own 2-3 new games a year, so I had to choose very carefully. A shame that the game's present obscurity prevents this fun artwork from being seen by more people. At least Yoshi doesn't seem to mind the Super Scope being blasted right next to his head

Fire to unveil a fantastic world!!

Yoshi's Road Hunting

The peaceful, beautiful island of...Jewelry Land. Here, the Koopa Army has appeared ONCE AGAIN! In order to return the 12 stolen jewels, Mario and Yoshi take on the Koopas!!

With your new item (the Super Scope) in hand, hop on Yoshi's back and shoot at the enemies in your way while progressing through various courses!!

(Left caption) Battle on roads that are filled with thrills.

(Right caption) Many unique boss characters show up.

(Yoshi's Road Hunting requires the Super Scope which is sold separately. The game can not be played with a normal controller.)

Yoshi's Island (Super Nintenedo / Super Famicom)
One of the most pleasant box arts in the entirety of the medium. Hell, one of the best games ever as well. For a brief period, Yoshi's name was mistranslated into English as YOSSY over in Japan. While a mistake, it sounds quite endearing.

Back:
Drawn onto canvas, the story of our heroes' birth.

Yoshis of various colors play a big part in some new action! The the latest game within the series you've been looking forward to...a world with a hand drawn touch opens up. The tale of the two heroes' birth!

***Super FX Chip***
The Super FX Chip was developed to make the display of richer images a reality. It’s a micro computer exclusive to the Super Famicom.

Yoshi's Panepon (Game Boy)
This overlooked Yoshi puzzler was renamed Tetris Attack for it's western release. Fresh off the success of Yoshi's Island, Raphael the Raven is referenced on the front cover.

Versus Type Game
1 Player Mode is available.
On Super Game Boy, play in brilliant color.

Back:
Adults, as well as children will certainly get addicted! Super simple controls and heart pounding puzzle action make up this grand masterpiece!

The controls are very simple! Just aling the cursor to the panels, and switch them between left and right! If you line up three or more of the same panels vertically or horizontally, they will be erased.

The panels are gradually rising. Falling panels also create a nuisance. An inevitable white hot battle in the exciting versus mode!!

Meticulously challenge yourself in puzzles mode, among other modes you can play.

Yoshi's Story (Nintendo 64)
The first game to really embracement the craft aesthetics later expanded on Yoshi's Wooly World and Crafted World. While the American package featured a 3D render playing to the system's strengths, the Japanese version doubled down on the knitting look featured in the game. (Translation note: Chibi is a distinctive Japanese character artstyle emphasizing small bodies and cute, exaggerated proportions.)

Back:
The world of picture books unfolds in this 'hand made' world. The astonishing power of the N64 brings forth a beautiful graphical explosion!

(Yoshi Caption: Of course, it's compatible with the rumble pack!)

Through magic, the island dwelling of the Yoshis has been turned into a picture book! Clay is piled on to the screen, as is cardboard. 'Turn over the pages' to change the material. Rotating the 3D stick, the very colorful chibi Yoshi's head off towards fruit eating action! Be sure to get get a taste of Koopa!

(About the back-up ability: While this software records your game scores and other data, after a game over, you can not continue from where you were previously playing.)

Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island (Game Boy Advance)
I never had much of an urge to downgrade from the brilliantly polished SNES version to the lesser graphics and sound the GBA could muster. Still, it does have some new levels...

Front:
Super Mario Advance 3
Yoshi Island + Mario Brothers

A 1~4 Playaer Action Game.
1 cartridge, 4 person battle!!

Back:
-A heartwarming, cozy, friendly world...
The colorful Yoshis and Baby Mario go on a big adventure in a hand drawn, picture book styled world! Throw eggs, use items to transform, and attack with a markedly increased array of new actions! The two heroes are full of cuteness, as they run about the canvas!

- As you would expect in (Mario Advance) 3, 4 player battle!!
Of course, this game also lets you play the Famicom Classic, Mario Bros! Four rival players maneuver around each other and things soon escalate into a heated battle!! Furthermore, "Multi Cartridge Play" allows for all three games in the 'Super Mario Advance' series to connect!
