Super Mario RPG Super Famicom Manual

It's not the Brady Bunch, but the cast of Square and Nintendo's far fetched but brilliantly executed collaboration. While the North American manual for Super Mario RPG is excellent, I prefer the busyness and more neutral color scheme that allows the graphics to really shine in the Japanese instruction booklet.

Nintendo Super Famicom

Super Mario RPG

Instruction and Handling booklet

Greetings

On this occasion of the purchase of the Nintendo Super Famicom cartridge (Super Mario RPG), we sincerely thank you. Before use, please carefully read this instruction and handling manual for directions and cautions to take while playing. Please refer back to it regularly for proper play instructions. Furthermore, please store this instruction and handling booklet with care.

Welcome, to the World of Mario RPG!

Luigi: Hey, how are you doing! It looks like once again, Mario has set off on another adventure. I didn't go, but I'll help out by cheering on from the background!!

1. This is a new style of RPG, full of interesting actions to perform!

It may be an RPG, but it's filled with fun action game elements. During battles, simple button commands can allow for continuous jump hits, or multiple fireballs that completely take out enemies!

(Caption) Although the battles are command style, the use of 'Action Commands' up your power! For more on the 'Action Commands,' read more from page 30.

2. Players can participate in 'Action Events'.

All throughout the game, various 'Action Events' have been prepared. These points contain the kind of tasks usual for Mario. You can jump on Yoshi for a race, among plenty of other activities. How fun!

3. Hidden on the fields are a number of exciting tricks and traps!

In this world that Mario has ventured into, the air is full of floating treasure boxes, jumping platforms and other contraptions. Of course there are pipes, seesaws, cannons and 'Chikuwa'(cylindrical) blocks within the world.

Story

We're at Mario's peaceful home. Princess Peach has come to visit and is out picking from the flower bed...when there's a strange shadow!

Approaching Princess Peach from behind is Koopa's vehicle. Before anyone could say something, Princess Peach has been kidnapped ONCE AGAIN! Leaving behind here final cries of 'HELP!", the poor Princess is off to Koopa's castle...

To free the Princess from Koopa's evil grip, our hero Mario heads off to Koopa Castle all alone! Wow! This time, he sure made it all the way to Koopa's Castle rather quickly...

In a room deep inside Koopa Castle, atop a chandelier...the decisive battle with Koopa finally begins! This time, while taking down Koopa in grand fashion... the castle suddenly began to massively shake! The heck, what is that...

(Right page)

A GIANT SWORD has thrusted itself deep into Koopa Castle!  What the...what's going to happen from here on out...!?

This is Mario World!

This is the stage for Mario and his friends' adventure. Piercing Koopa Castle and soaring over it's center is an ominous sword...
Hurry, Mario! Go-save-the-world!

Luigi: Wow, this place is expansive! It's the location of Mario's adventure. How about going to the southern island and that sunken ship...

Field screen, Treasure Boxes and More

(Left Page)

The game is made up of map and field screens. Let's dig into a big investigation about how things work, and what will happen!

Field screen
One of the fundamental screens of this game. You'll talk with various people, while monsters also appear as well. On the edge of the field are protrusions and pipes which if entered, will move you to the next field or map screen.

World map
If you clear a field, you'll enter the map screen. While moving Mario over the map's course points, by pressing the A button, he'll enter that field screen.  Courses whose points you haven't yet reached can not be entered.

Field Actions

(Left Page)

Learn all about contraptions familiar to the Mario series, new, old...but just plain FUN!

Luigi: So, we're talking about Mario's actions! Besides this game having Mario action seen elsewhere in the series, it's also full of those games' fun contraptions. Do your best in utilizing them to get through the game!

(Caption) It looks like there are areas where you can't use the Y button dash jump to cross and grab a treasure chest.

Board:
These boards float in midair. They change direction of movement. Carefully consider this when getting on one.

Spinning Spinning Flower:
This flower spins around and around. If you get on it and jump, at that moment Mario will perform a huge leap towards the direction he's facing.

Trampoline
The one on the left is a 'Warp Trampoline,' transferring you to another location. Getting on a 'Smiling Trampoline' to the right will allow you to make a huge leap.

(Right Page)

The game is full of other kinds of contraptions!

See Saw
Getting on top of the vacant portion, for a moment you'll send your company flying upwards. When they fall back down, the recoil for Mario means...

Switch
Found here and there are mysterious switches.  Stomp on one and who knows what will happen. Whatever the result, get on, see what happens and enjoy!

One Point Advice (Hints)

If you reach a dead end on your journey, the Frog Hermit of Ribbit Ribbit Lake offers advice to those who seek it.

Frog Hermit: During the game, you should seek my advice at any point you need it. I just want you guys to keep trying, even just a bit harder!

During the game, there will be times where someone is talking and Mario cannot move. When this happens, press the B button to jump. Everyone wants to see Mario jump!

In this game, with everyone using the same flower points to perform special skills, it's of huge importance to increase your maximum flower points. There are two types of flowers. The ones you get from treasure boxes and elsewhere, which will increase your flower points at that instant. The 'flower gifts,' an item, can only be used by opening them in the menu screen. They're good to use any time outside of battle.

To get to a spot that's too high to climb, you'll have to make a hidden block appear. You can bet this is common knowledge to Mario. Of course in this game, you'll need to use such common sense. However, there's not just hidden blocks, but hidden boards too. Knowing that, in the world...everywhere above your head are treasure boxes you can't see, as they're transparent by nature! If something seems a bit strange, try jumping!

So what do you do when you get on a see-saw but still can't jump high enough? Maybe try jumping on the see-saw from a higher location, which makes sense. Do it this way and you'll go higher, just like that.

Concerning how many experience points you need to reach the next level, do you know it's location in the menu screen? One reason to check is that it'll give you peace of mind in long dungeons. Whenever you get a level up, your HP will be completely restored. Keep the remaining number of experience points in your head. That will come in useful!!

Student of the Frog Hermit: During the second half of the game, I'm sorry to say that the hazards will become more treacherous. Come visit my place with frog coins in hand. Please take advantage of the items you can get with them.
