Star #3 - 大砲で一っ飛び > たいほうでひとっとび > Taihou de hitotobi > One flight with the Cannon
This stage was localized as "Shoot into the Wild Blue". Mario must now make a much more delicate shot than simply landing on the large floating island of the last world. Several new kanji, a couple of which are particularly important, are introduced.
1. 大砲 > たいほう > Taihou ＞ Cannon
大 (たい/Tai), meaning, big represents a person standing to make themselves appear as large as possible. 砲 (ほう/Hou) depicts a rock (石) wrapped up (包), as if about to discharged. While 砲 can mean cannon on its own, the addition of 大 emphasizes the size of the bomb-omb backed weaponry.
2. で > De > Denotes means
Here, the important で particle points to the cannon being the means of taking flight, as you hope to catch the pole rather than sending yourself entirely off the stage!
3. 一っ飛び > ひとっとび > Hitotobi > One Flight
The easiest kanji to remember 一 a simple dash depicting one finger. While Arabic numerals are used most often in Japanese, the kanji numerals still appear quite frequently when part of a compound word. As you may have seen before, the tiny っ is meant to elongate the connecting "To" (と) sound.
You'll be seeing the 大 and 一 characters used daily if you spend even moderate time reading Japanese. Once again, this all adds up to: 大砲で一っ飛び > たいほうでひとっとび > > Taihou de hitotobi > One flight with the cannon
