Tekken

It's wonderful how the impossibly advanced pre-renders of the mid-90s have been topped in real time some two (and a half) decades later. Props to Namco for never completely giving up on so many rather ridiculous character designs.

Motivated by riches, fame, schemes and revenge...8 martial artists challenge themselves in a grand tournament, enveloping themselves in a whirlpool of death. In textured 3D space, the fighters' lively techniques are on full display within highly perilous battles...appearing on the PlayStation.

Tekken 2

Funny how the characters on the front cover look rather mannequin-like, when back in 1996 this degree of realism in 3D modeling was amazing. I chose to get a copy of Soul Blade with my PS1 in 1997, but Tekken 2 was featured in the demo disk. Fun times watching the intro movie over and over...but Soul Blade's was even better!

Tekken 3

The third generation of the Mishama family, Jin, takes over the cover for Tekken 3. Viewing this always bring back memories of when Tekken 3 was by far the hottest import for PS1 owners, particularly since other big hits like Metal Gear Solid and the Final Fantasy series required a command of the Japanese language to enjoy.

In connection with a mysterious life form, 'The God of Fighting,' There have been multiple incidents of fighters disappearing from around the world. Heihachi, convinced that 'The God of Fighting' was after the 'strong souls' of the fighters, has decided to hold "The king of iron fist tournament 3" in order to lure him.

This time, in addition to a perfect arcade to home port, various original modes for the home version have been added, plus the time released characters and plenty of beautiful ending movies. The burning fight is not over!

Tekken Tag Tournament

The cold, sterile portrait of Kazuya Mishima is a wonderful example of the PlayStation 2's 'digital apocalypse aesthetic.' I wasn't a huge Tekken fan during the PS1 days, but played tons of TTT in arcades and on the PS2 just to listen to the incredible soundtrack. Even while rooting heavily for the Dreamcast, also I couldn't help but be dazzled by how smooth and colorful the graphics were.
