Altered Beast / Beast King's Chronicle
Rad, dark artwork by Sega's Michiaki Satoh (source: Segaretro.org). The Athena portrait on the backside was missing is North America. This game often gets bagged on as a lackluster launch title, but it was a really neat (if a bit shallow) arcade beat-em-up as a kid.
By fist or by fang, your enemy will be torn to pieces! In this battle, men will be transformed!

Columns
Far more interesting artwork here than the American release, which was just illustrations of the game's jewels. Columns always felt like the "other" puzzler for those who didn't have access to a Nintendo and Tetris. But, like Tetris, it does have some rather neat music you could loop for hours.

Ecco The Dolphin
Like Kirby, Ecco's Japanese incarnation is cuter than what we got in North America. Even the shark looks a bit like a doofus. This game fascinated the gaming press due to its overall uniqueness. While the attempt deserves respect, I found both games to be absolutely no fun.

"Together with me, let's go for a swim in the vast, great deep.."
"Ecco," the Dolphin with five spots on his head, must unravel the vastness that is the ocean in order to rescue his fellow Dolphins.
~The Grand Ocean Adventure~
Back:
Where did the huge, mysterious waterspout take your friends? In a huge adventure, you'll head off to the great depths to find their whereabouts.
With the sudden appearance of a giant water spout, the lifeforms within the peaceful ocean have disappeared, leaving a dead sea behind. In order to help his fellow Dolphins, "Ecco" has begun his adventure. Passing through the deep darkness of the ocean's bottom, scary sharks throughout the waters, and even time itself, "Ecco" unfolds an adventure of grand scale.
Expect to make new discoveries at the bottom of the ocean!
Ecco The Dolphin II
Another friendly Japanese cover looking like a Sea World advertisement. I actually prefer the western artwork which is low-key intimidating. Almost as if Echo's smiling at the player and asking "You really want to experience ANOTHER nightmare?"

Ecco travels to a time, far away...
Ecco, a dolphin with 5 stars on his head. Living with his friends in the peaceful seas, danger has approached once again. A messenger from the future has appeared as well...
Guided by the 5 stars of destiny, a grand adventure, surpassing space and time begins.
Forgotten Worlds
The first ever Capcom CPS1 game, it received a favorably reviewed Mega Drive port. You may recognize the nameless blue soldier as an Assist that appeared in Marvel vs. Capcom ten years later.

These mysterious soldiers have appeared from within the ruins. Fight! Fight for justice and peace.

Golden Axe
Some excellent artwork that would be a perfect fit for an 80s heavy metal album. Not for the faint of heart, the dark overtones of the Golden Axe series were stronger than the comically ridiculous Altered Beast.

The legend of the wandering battle axe...begins now!

Osomatsu-Kun Hachamecha Gekijo (Nonsense Theater)
Based on a humorous manga, this one never came out in North America. Even if the general premise was rather alien, the large, expressive sprites might have turned some heads in the late 80s.

A huge explosion of fun...and nonsense!!
Navigate hazards by jumping, and attack with your slingshot! Defeat the mean Iyami and help out your five brothers!!
Rambo III
The unassuming, pre-Sonic The Hedgehog Sega made a number of very impressive license grabs in the late 80s, not the least of which is Sylvester Stallone gracing their software.

Set off to rescue Colonel Trautman! Rambo's anger explodes. Now, the solitary fight...has begun.

Crazy that when this was brought over to America, West Virginia's own 'Flatwoods Monster' was removed from the back of the box!

Streets of Rage / Bare Knuckle
Looking at Adam and Axel, it's a surprise this game wasn't localized as "Streets of Roid-Rage." However, more realistic physiques grace the American cover. All jokes aside, don't sleep on this game's excellent, if shamelessly 'inspired' soundtrack courtesy of Yuzo Koshiro.
