Super Mario Bros Series: 1985 - 1996

Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2
Welcome to the Super Mario Bros. page of this site! This first two games have little in the way of translatable material, being early Famicom and Disk System games with minimal ad copy. Keep scrolling and enjoy the artwork, as well as differences from the American versions!

Super Mario Land
Really fun artwork showcasing the fascinating world of Saras Land. Everything from Egyptian pyramids, distinctive Chinese mountains and all sorts of enemies to never be seen again. The back packaging is easier on the eyes and showcases Mario in his propellor plane.

Super Mario Bros. 3
Even though the minimalist US cover with the yellow background is iconic, the JP Mario 3 cover is even better as he's being pursued by the still rather odd looking Bowser and his kids. Both Mario 3 and World tried to coin the term 'Technical Fantasy Game'.

A 3 megabit class technical fantasy game.

You've been waiting for it. The third entry to Super Mario Brothers is finally here! In the third confrontation against the Koopa Army, the stage moves from the Mushroom Kingdom to the Mushroom World. Now the children of the Evil King Koopa, the seven Koopa siblings, have traveled all over the Mushroom World to indulge in whatever pranks they wish. They've even gone so far as to steal the magical staffs from the rulers of seven countries...transforming them into animals! In order to return peace to the Mushroom World, Princess Peach has sent Mario and Luigi off on an adventure!

(1) A map screen has been added
(2) More powerful enemies.
(3) Introducing Tail Mario.
(4) Chase after flying ships.
(5) Battle the little Koopas!

Super Mario World

What busy, yet fun and welcoming packaging! The globe illustration kinda makes you wonder how long Nintendo was envisioning Super Mario Galaxy...

The ultimate 'Technical Fantasy Game'

And now, the stage is set on Dinosaur Land.

On a peaceful day, Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach all journeyed off towards Yo'ster Island for vacation. Yo'ster Island is a part of the far away, southern islands known as Dinosaur Land. Here, the evil King Koopa has once again shown up! He's used magic against the island's dinosaurs, as well as captured Princess Peach, again! Ahh, what a problem! (Up to) Two players, combining their abilities with the mysterious dragon "Yoshi," will unravel a huge adventure and action-filled drama as they take it to the Koopa Gang...the series continues on the Super Famicom!

Super Mario USA
The reskinned Doki Doki Panic proved so intriguing that "Mario 2" was brought back to Japan in 1992. The Japanese cover art is a rather humorous redo of Doki Doki Panic.

Mario has come back from the USA!

Developed by the Super Mario staff, "Dream Factory: Doki Doki Panic," using characters from Japan's 1987 Fuji Television Special Event "Dream Factory," was released for the Famicom Disk System. Retitled "Super Mario Bros 2" and adding such things as a new boss characters, the game was a big hit in America.

The familiar quintet of Mario, Luigi, Kinopio (Toad) and Peach have plenty to do in the Dream World. Buried within the ground are daikon radishes and carrots, which you can uproot one by one to finish off that trickster Wart!

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

A gorgeous preview into the world of Super Mario Land 2 is depicted. Little wonder the US cover is almost identical. While titles such as Super Mario Land and Tetris were quality, I was slightly underwhelmed by the Game Boy whenever playing a relative or friend's system. The likes of Super Mario Land 2 and Link's Awakening turned it into a must have. Unfortunately, I insisted on a Game Gear and had to wait until later to experience these games.

Return peace back to Mario Land!!

The evil character 'Wario' has taken over the peaceful Mario Land!! You'll need the myserious 6 coins to open the door to Mario's Castle, which has been seized by Wario.

Wario has hidden the '6 Coins' all over Mario Land, leaving them to be guarded by his minions. Take back the '6 Coins,' and rescue Mario Land from the clutches of Wario!

Also, take on the challenge with the Bunny Mario power-up!

Super Mario Collection / Super Mario All-Stars
Mario also dons his top-hat in the Japanese version of Miro All-Stars, and gets gold plated as well. I remember getting this game as a 10 year old, and being rather disappointed with it. While it was a fantastic value and the all games were indeed technically superior, I preferred the look of the NES games I grew up with, especially Mario 3. Regardless, many prefer the All-Stars/Collection versions, and it even got sold once again as a stand alone Wii release.

The masterpieces are now "Super"!
The familiar Mario series on the Famicom has become a 16 megabit Super Famicom cartridge. The extra 'battle game' from Mario 3 is attached, as well as a delightful save ability. With 4 games included, this is a fantastic value. From new users to older fans, by all means, please visit the Mushroom Kingdom, now with high quality graphics.
