The Japanese Castlevania manual is packed! So many brilliant (colored) illustrations that were missing from the sparse black and white American manual. Very interesting how overt the religious references are in here, even going so far as to directly reference the title of Christ.
Famicom Disk System
Devil Castle Dracula
(As part of) rewriting your disk cards, here's how you properly apply stickers.
1. A sheet of stickers are enclosed for use with the disk card. Carefully peel (Sticker A) off.
2. Having made certain which side is A and which is B and deciding on the position from which to apply the sticker, neatly place it on the disk, starting from a corner (of the indented surface).
(Caption: Right here?)
3. Once you nicely place one more sticker in just the same way, you're all done.
(Caption: One also goes right on my back?)
4. Go ahead and lightly press the four corners of the sticker once more to make sure it's on ok. Alright, you're now ready to go play!

Before starting a game, you'll need to make these preparations!
After properly connecting the disc drive to the Famicom console and ram adaptor, turn on the console's power. If everything's connected properly, there will be a fun scene of Mario and Luigi running around. From there, insert the Disk Card with Side A placed up. Be particularly careful about inserting it from the other side. If this screen does not sufficiently appear, try once more from the beginning, carefully making sure everything is connected and set.
After the "Now Loading" message appears, a screen like the one to the right will be displayed. If Side A isn't placed up, it will not appear.
If the title screen like the one to the right does appear, press the start button. Many disk games will have you advance through the mode select screen(s). If you're not able to start the game, please see page 40.
While the disk drive's red ramp is connected to the system, be sure not to press the eject button, the console's reset button, or touch the power switch. Carefully read the Disk System's manual!
Devil Castle Dracula
Story
There is a tiny, peaceful country in medieval Europe called Transylvania. That country is associated with the legend of Dracula.
The Devil King Dracula appears once every hundred years, at a time when the power of Christ weakens. People of wicked hearts pray for his revival. During the time of his resurrection, his magic power grows stronger.
At one time in the past, Dracula was brought back to this world. However...
(Cont) However...
This time he's covered the entire world in pitch-black clouds, with an ambition to rule over a world of darkness. The hero Christopher Belmont set out and crushed those plans.
The Devil King Dracula Resurrects on Easter
Dracula was defeated in the life or death battle by Christopher Belmont, and once again spent another hundred years asleep in the Transylvania countryside.
On the evening of Easter, the town held a grand carnival in celebration of Christ's resurrection.
However, in the devastated ruins of a monastery outside of town, heretic followers offered Dracula's remains the...
(Cont) ...fresh, poured blood of humans. This black mass service was conducted to bring life back to the undead.
As a result, many wicked thunderclouds covered the town. A long strand of lightning instantly shot through the monastery. Yielding dark ambitions, the Demon King Dracula has once again brought back to the world.
Rescuing us from this crisis is the young Simon, heir to the Belmont bloodline. Holding a whip containing mysterious power which was given to him by his father, he sets off alone towards Dracula's castle.
First, start by registering your name
If you press the start button at the title screen, the mode select screen will come up. Within the game, the data of up to three people can be recorded.
How to enter your name

2. 3... (Cont...)
2. (Cont) From the 3 people, select an empty "PLAYER" slot and press the START button.
3. Use the cross key to move through the alphabet and press the A button to decide.
4. When you're done, select END and press the A button to complete registration. To correct any letters, press the B button while the "Down" arrow is placed over the letter you wish to correct. Then use the cross button to make your correction.
Eliminating a registered name
1. At the mode select screen, select "NAME KESU" (Name Erase) and press the "START" button.
2. Move the ">" key until you reach the name you wish to erase. There, you can press START to erase it.
Alright, start the game!
Once you're finished registering your name, select it and then press the start button to begin. During the game, when the screen shows up telling you to insert Side A or B of the disk card, follow the instructions and insert accordingly.
You can save your game data
Whenever you receive a game over, you can choose which stage you wish you to visit next. Up to two data files can be preserved with information of all the play up to this point. When you start your next game, you can choose to start from the very beginning on the previous block of the game world.
If you get a Game Over
If you're not able to clear a block within the time limit, fall in a hole, or lose your life to enemy attacks, the player will be out of a life. When the losses pile up to a game over, you can select "CONTINUE" from the Game Over screen, allowing you to start from the beginning of that block.
After ending a game once
Once you've started a game twice and your name has been registered and saved, you'll begin from the very first block (within the stage you've progressed to) of your previous save. If you didn't make it that far, you'll start from the very beginning.

The lineup of enemy characters impeding Simon's way
Besides Dracula being resurrected from his dark casket, plenty of other creatures were brought back as well. Make good use of items on hand to defeat them.
* Vampire Bat -Boss- (3000)
While avoiding your whip, he'll come at you from overhead. The axe and clock should give you an easy victory.
* Bat (200)
1. They fly in waves. 2. They're prone to attacking suddenly.
* Black Leopard (200)
These appear on stage 1. They'll come running once you're within a certain range.
* Zombie (100)
These appear in the reception room. Though weak (on their own), they appear one after another, making them unexpectedly tough.
* Merman (300)
These pop out of the water unexpectedly, shooting fireballs towards the player.
* Medusa Boss (3000)
The second boss character. Usually hiding inside a stone statue, her true form will appear if approached. The clock, holy water and cross are effective.
* Mummy Man Boss (3000)
The third obstacle. Being twins, they'll attack by closing in from both sides. They'll also throw out waves of bandages.
* Medusa (300)
They'll come at you in waves. They are surprisingly simple to deal with if you just jump out of their way.
* Crow (200)
They'll come at you while flying. You can't read their movements.
* Armor (400)
Attacking you while moving, one shot won't kill them. Better to hit them from a distance.
* Flea Man (500)
Approaching players is this most disagreeable enemy...creepy enough to make one's shoulders shiver! Always quickly bouncing and jumping around, try to hit him the instant he lands on the ground.
* Ghost (300)
Roaming around in an attempt to possess people, it's important to put a beating on him!
* Death God -Boss- (700)
He serves as the aide within Dracula's Castle. He fills the entire screen with sickles, all of which come towards the player. The cross is effective.
* White Dragon (1000)
He shoots fireballs as his neck contorts around. Attack with your chain whip.
* Bone Stack (400)
Shoots fire for an undetermined amount of time. As his body is very solid, you'll have trouble dealing with him unless you get in consecutive hits.
* Frankenstein and Flea Man -Boss- (5000)
With the flea man shooting fireballs as well, the Frankenstein's boss is quite tough.
* White Skeleton (300)
While maintaining a distance from Simon, he hurls his bones.
* Red Skeleton (400)
No matter how times you knock him down, he gets back up.
* Big Eagle (300)
He appears in order to transport the flea men. As soon as he swoops down, take the fight to him.
* Axe Armor (500)
The axe which he throws returns like a boomerang.
* Dracula -Boss- (50000) ?
Other ways to get points
* Fire Ball (100) * Mummy Bandages (100) * Thrown White Skeleton Bones (100) * Axe Man's Axe (100) * Throwing a single cross, axe or holy water at two or more enemies will yield bonus points.

You'll have to overcome 18 stages across 6 blocks. Defeat the Devil King Dracula.
* Object of the Game
The player wields his whip as he defeats enemies. Figure out the bosses' patterns and defeat them to take back the ball they've sealed off with magic energy. As Simon, you'll have to gather 6 balls.
Block 1
Within Block 1, many of the game's enemies do not (yet) come out. While taking care of the enemies that do emerge, be sure to save up the hearts from candles you've destroyed. That will aid in obtaining a high score. Using your pocket watch is a reliable way to easily deal with the creatures of the basement and the vampire bat.
Required Technique
While in a jump: Whether preparing to destroy a candle above one's head or hitting an enemy as you descend from the sky, here's a technique you'll need to use once you've made your jump:
* Press your right thumb on the controller in such a way that when you go from button A to button b, you'll be able to time consecutive button presses.

Stage 2...Basement
Stage 3...Corridor (Hall)
Block 2
Here, tricks and traps which float and hang from ceilings make their first appearance. Erroring on either of those can result in a loss of life for Simon, so you'll have to make your way through the level with good timing. Watch out for the Armor and Medusa enemies.

This block consists of many Flea Men, Bone Stacks, Medusas, Crows and more, all looking to stop Simon in his tracks. Within the block, the crows will frequently attempt ambushes, flapping their wings as they aim for Simon. With their movements hard to read, you'll have to skillfully use your items to get through.

Block 4
This block contains a dizzying assortment of stages: Beginning in an underground cavern, followed by a courtyard and ending in a corridor. You'll have to figure out the pattern to tackle the underground cavern. The courtyard brings the combined attack of flea men and big eagles. The eagles will look to drop the flea men directly on to you. If you don't get away at once, you're in for trouble!

Block 5
This level has these new enemies: The Red Skeleton and the Axe Armor. The Red Skeleton only attacks by ramming you with his body. No matter how many times you hit him, he'll annoyingly regenerate! Be careful of the Axe Armor's Axe and Boomerang, as it returns to him after being thrown.
