Virtua Fighter Series Japanese Packaging Translations (1994-1996)

 Virtua Fighter (Sega Saturn) (11.22.94)

Highly antiquated now, Virtua Fighter was really something to behold in 1993. The bold flat, shaded polygons and hard-hitting soundtrack delivered it's own memorable vibe. The initial Saturn port was poorly handles, but the textured Virtua Fighter Remix and the stunning port of Virtua Fighter 2 more than delivered.

In order to become the strongest, the warriors have assembled in a heated fight, where the space between virtual and reality converge!

Virtua Fighter Remix (Saturn) (7.14.95)

A launch game certainly has problems when a free 'remix' is sent to Saturn owners just a half a year later. While the gritty 2D art looks nice, I thought the texture mapped polygons lost the awkward charm of the original style.

Groundbreaking 3D fighting action...has become even more real!

Virtua Fighter (32X) (10.20.95)

The 32X port of Virtua Fighter impressed many and was considered an incredible conversion, more polished than the rushed Saturn edition in some cases.

With the aim of being the strongest, these warriors hone their skills. Losing the fight shall not be tolerated...

Virtua Fighter has finally arrived on the Super 32X! Includes the arcade mode, versus mode, and of course, a martial arts approved tournament mode to sharpen your skills!

(Upper left) In tournament mode, up to 8 players can participate!!

Virtua Fighter 2 (Sega Saturn) (11.30.95)

Shattering the early belief that the Saturn couldn't handle 3D, its port of Virtua Fighter 2 was astoundingly clean and smooth, giving all of Namco's Tekken PlayStation ports a run for their money.

Virtua Fighter Animation / Virtua Fighter Mini (3.29.96)

I can remember spotting Virtua Fighter Animation in the Game Gear section of Best Buy in 1996 and being quite puzzled by its very existence. Based on the obscure anime series, the game's script was heavily modified for North America.

* The characters have been made bigger and more impressive on the large screen (mode)!

* According to the most suitable moment, (automatically) switch between the normal and large screen viewpoints in the real time mode!

Virtua Fighter Kids (7.26.96)

Even with the redesigned backgrounds and various tweaks and gimmicks, Virtua Fighter Kids was criticized as being a rather shameless cash-grab, not to mention it's core gameplay was highly disrupted by the super-deformed body shapes. What's more, Tekken 2 beat this game to the punch by including a 'big-head mode' in the base game.

Spine Card:

A new release, born again in comical form.

Fighters Megamix (12.21.96)

Years before Nintendo's Super Smash Bros, Sega released their own cross-over combining the technical play of Virtua Fighter and the brutality of Fighting Vipers, plus plenty of strange additions such as the Daytona USA car. The secret character Deku even looks a lot like Amingo, who didn't appear in Capcom's MvC2 until 2000.
