Sonic The Hedgehog & Spin-Offs (1997-2002) Japanese Box Art / Packaging Translations

Sonic Jam (Saturn) (6.20.97)

Sonic Jam was considered one of the best retro collections of its time, with perfect ports of the Mega Drive quartet and tons of extras, including a 3D Sonic area that sadly didn't come into fruition on the system as a full game.

Spine Card:

Run!! Run!! Sonic the Hedgehog runs!!

Run!! Run!! Sonic the Hedgehog runs!!

Sonic runs, heading towards the shining sun.

Sonic runs, his heart boldly expanding.

Sonic runs, together with the Sun, travelling to the ends of the earth.

Sonic runs, full of power so that nothing stands in his way, he continues on.

Sonic R (Saturn) (12.4.97)

One of my guilty pleasures, Sonic R suffered from some atrocious controls, but racing to the bizarrely upbeat Richard Jacques soundtrack is an experience unlike anything else. Translation note: 鬼ごっこ (Oni Make-Believe) is the Japanese equivalent to 'Playing Tag' in the west.

Spine Card:

Sonic RUNS WITH POWER in in 3D action racing!!

Back:

This time, Sonic is a Racing? Rapid? Running? Rush?

Retire

Retire? Sorry, how could we ever say that? Run with a whoosh, heading towards the goal!!

Gran Prix Mode

Challenge yourself to the decisive battle of the world's fastest characters in the [World Gran Prix]!!

2 Player Battle Mode

With the screen divided into upper and lower portions, Player 1 and Player 2 may also race each other!!

Time Attack Mode

Besides of course including the regular time attack mode, play tag by popping balloons!!

Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast) (12.23.98)

I spent years highly anticipating this title after the Saturn's "Sonic X-Treme" turned into vaporware. While the bold scope of Sonic Adventure had plenty of rough spots, particularly with non-speed oriented characters, levels such as Emerald Coast, Red Mountain and Speed Highway were tremendously satisfying.

Super spectacle, high-speed, role-paying action is here!

The playable characters include Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy. Also, Ganma and Big are newly introduced. These six characters sport six types of action in the various, interlocking stories. It's time to resist and time to cooperate while we deepen our friendships. We're going forward with the six adventures.

Sonic 3D Blast / Sonic 3D Flickies' Island (Saturn) (10.14.99)

Both the Genesis and Saturn versions released in America in 1996 to disappointing, slightly confused reception. I remember loving the little FMV clip at the beginning of the Genesis version, but quickly being at a loss once the game started. This odd isometric platformer didn't make it to Japan until after the Dreamcast and Sonic Adventure released in both regions. 3D Blast is notable for having different soundtracks: Jun Senoue and Tatsuyuki Maeda on the 16-bit version. Richard Jacques on the Saturn.

Spine Card:

This time, the setting is a mysterious, solitary island. Sonic's adventures keep on goin'!

Back:

Run, assist, knock 'em out.

Once again, Sonic is on a rampage!

The mysterious jewel, the Chaos Emerald sleeping within the isolated "Flickies' Island," has fallen into Dr. Eggman's evil hand!

In order to protect the Chaos Emerald, and to also rescue the 'Flickies,' Sonic goes all out, in all directions!

The familiar 'Tails' and 'Knuckles' also appear. They'll give Sonic a hand!

Sonic Pocket Adventure (5.25.00)

In interesting amalgamation of past Sonic games, this huge third party pick-up for the NGPC featured stages from 2, music from 3 and Sonic's latest green-eyed look based on Sonic Adventure.

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (12.2.01)

An enhanced port of Sonic Adventure 2 did what was thought to be impossible just a few years ago...appear on a Nintendo console. Growing up in the heat of the 16-bit console wars, I was hit with the oddest feeling upon seeing Sonic on the cover of Nintendo Power...

Sonic Advance (12.20.01)

After growing up in the heat of the 16-bit console wars, during the original release of Sonic Advance, it was almost surreal seeing an original 2D Sonic title being produced for Nintendo's fairly new portable.
