Paper Mario / Mario Story (8.11.00)
Being developed under the working title "Super Mario RPG 2" at one point, Nintendo smoothly pivoted into their own style after losing Square as co-developers. Going in the opposite direction from Super Mario RPG, here Nintendo embraced 2D graphics on a primarily 3D system.

"Paper Mario" sets off on a new (RPG) adventure!!
Mario and his allies, flapping around like paper, unravel a 3D world in this fun filled RPG! In a new Mario World fusing both action and role-playing, Mario goes on a big, new adventure! Both the Star Spirits and Princess Peach have been abducted by Koopa, so it's off to rescue them.
(Caption 1) By getting various badges, you can create the strongest Mario of your own!
(Caption 2) A battle system where the inflicted damage changes according to the timing of button presses.
(Caption 3) Flat characters play a huge part in the 3-dimensional setting!
