Sonic The Hedgehog & Spin-Offs (1994-1996) Japanese Packaging / Box Art Translation

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (2.2.94)

Very curious how Knuckles is front and center on the Japanese cover, even booting Tails to the back, whereas in America only savvy Sonic fans would know that was Knuckles peaking out of a bush. I rented this game often in the 90s. I didn't even like the level design for the most part, but it was worth playing just for the music. Funny how a decade and a half later, it turned out MJ was almost certainly involved in some capacity.

(Sonic captions)

Run until it hurts to breath.

Without looking back, run with all your might.

(Knuckles captions)

Introducing your rival!

Run along with the sun and blue sky.

Sonic & Tails run, run on the legendary 'Floating Island'!

Sonic Drift (3.18.94)

A Sonic racing game always made sense, but combining the famously speedy and nimble characters to vehicles was an odd move. Sonic does have a sweet ride, though.

Gran Prix! Time Attack!!

You can also do 1P vs 2P battle mode!!!

Sonic The Hedgehog is #1 in the world of speed. This time, he challenges himself to racing in machines!!

Sonic & Knuckles (10.18.94)

I preferred the black background of the American release which much better conveyed the epic, climatic feel of the game. But sadly, it was one of the first Genesis games I can remember to ditch the ultra tough plastic shell cases for card board.

The Japanese cover also heavily markets the lock-on technology, which at the time felt like Sega's answer to Donkey Kong Country's pre-rendered graphics taking the world by storm. The game itself was really neat, as well. Knuckles felt like the perfect partner for Sonic, and certain levels such as the Lava Reef and Sky Sanctuary Zones were jaw dropping.

Sonic & Knuckles

Lock-On System

In Sonic & Knuckles, you'll be a bit surprised by the lock on cartridge!

Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 lock on with Sonic & Knuckles! When you lock on, something will happen!

Sonic Triple Trouble / Sonic & Tails 2 (11.11.94)

I owned this for the Game Gear. The graphics were very pleasant for the hardware, but the action and sound was rather lacking compared to the Genesis games. I recall always getting stuck on the submarine level. Sonic in a submarine instead of running around really says it all.

We meet yet again, Sonic & Tails!

The familiar Dr. Eggman adds some new characters. As the fight for the chaos emeralds repeats, there's even greater chaos!!

Can't you already feel the revelry and fun!?

Sonic Drift 2 (3.17.95)

3 more characters join in to form a more robust cast. Like it's predecessor, it didn't review too hot. There's something immediately claustrophobic about these highly nimble characters being confined to vehicles. Well, maybe not Eggman.

It's starting once again, the Chaos Gran Prix!!

Sonic the Hedgehog, along with his friends and rivals begin a white hot racing battle~!! Also, enjoy the time attack and 2 player versus mode!!

Knuckles Chaotix (4.21.95)

I remember drooling over Knuckles' own adventure in the magazines and desperately wishing to procure a 32X to play it. With infamously awkward 'tethered' gameplay, it hasn't even been included in the handful of Sonic collections.

On a strange island, a new adventure begins....

* Between you and the CPU, skillfully use two characters.

* In one and two player, both can control the characters together.

* With 'ring power,' you can perform  variety of actions!

Knuckles and his four allies have appeared on the 'strange island'. This time, cooperation is paramount! Stretching, throwing...use your 'ring power' in exhilarating cooperative action!

Tails' Skypatrol (4.28.95)

Despite Sonic Mania remaining in full effect by the mid 90s, Tails' more flight-centric spinoff remained a Japanese exclusive until being included in Sonic Adventure DX for the GameCube.

"My tails, are for spirit and bravery. My spirit is in full force! My bravery perseveres! With these two tails, I'll remember my unbounding energy and unyielding bravery."

In order to protect the peaceful island from the schemes of a witch, Tails begins a thrilling, heart-pounding adventure! With his two tails bountifully rotating, he sets off on SKYPATROL~!

Tails Adventure (9.22.95)

This late Game Gear release has Tails staring in his own Metroidvania style adventure. Viewing footage, the view point seems way too close and makes for some confusing navigation. I wonder how this concept would have turned out on the Saturn instead...

(Images taken from Gamefaqs.)

You'll need a persistent heart, and just a bit of bravery and spirit.

Really, just a little bit will do. Well then, LET'S GO on the big adventure!!

Oh no! Oh no! The evil Battle Kukku Empire has headed over to Cocoa Island! Alright, Tails begins his big adventure! Attack the stages using items and your wits. As for the bad guys, take them out by throwing bombs! Now...it's time to head out! Launch the 'Sea Fox'!

Sonic Labyrinth (11.17.95)

Utilizing isometric gameplay similar to Sonic 3D Blast for the Mega Drive and Saturn, Labyrinth released to overall negative review. Viewing footage of the game, it looks particularly frustrating due to the zoomed-in camera.

Sonic...will absolutely not give up. That is the number one thing about him.

Face off once again, its Sonic vs. Dr. Eggman. Using his rolling dash, he throws himself through the labyrinths. Bouncing and rolling around, he's out to take back the chaos Emeralds. Sonic the Hedgehog's big adventure begins now!!
